Review of Freaks (1932) by David R — 05 Mar 2008
Definitely ahead of its time and a film one either loves or loathes. I love it. At no time patronising, merely a story set in a specific landscape. It is hard to describe the film but it is a thriller set in specific circumstances, the abilities of the protagonists are essential to the tale.
Extremely well acted. If these people did not have challenges the story would not have existed, but each is presented as a human being first and it is this that audiences of the time had a problem with.
Prejudice has no place in society and this film deals with it head-on, in a wonderful, moving and deeply thoughtful way. It might not be comfortable for some to watch, but it should be watched.
