Review of Five Minutes of Heaven (2009) by Clare W — 12 Jun 2009
Today's movie for the Sydney Film Festival was the Irish flick Five Minutes of Heaven which sees James Nesbitt and Liam Neeson in an expose of what it is like to be on either side of a brutal murder that occurred in the heat of the 1970s religious war in Northern Island.
Neeson's character Alistair Little is on the Protestant/Ulster side of the debate and as a 17 year old shoots a Catholic man; only to find the murder was witnessed by the man's younger brother, 11 year old Joe Griffin (played by James Nesbitt as an adult).
The two come together as adults 23 years later in some form of documentary series. Absolutely phenomenal performances by both men - but particularly by James Nesbitt in a film that really shows the scars of this kind of violent act.
