Review of Final Girl (2015) by Matthew S — 13 Aug 2015
"Final Girl" does not really live up to the cinematic trope one thinks would be the aim. The film fails to even establish "the trope" before it deconstructs it. We are with the intended "victim" long before she takes the center of the slasher film cliche. If the film aims any higher -- say that the perhaps the "girl" is more than one or that "boy" replaces "girl" -- we never clearly know. It's too bad because somewhere here was an interesting idea for both satire and commentary.
Tyler Shields is too focused on the film's "look" -- which is not as stylish as some of the critics suggest. Essentially sets / woods and a whole lot of flood lighting and digital effects. There is no real point or suspense.
Abigail Breslin and Alexander Ludwig are this film's strongest points. They, along with some fairly "clever" tricks here and there -- warrant the movie more value than it deserves.
