The CGI was outstanding and the story was connected back to the original books in obvious ways without overdoing it. While there were many new characters introduced, and their development was lacking at times, we have 3 more movies to sort them out and what we did get from the new characters showed some depth and nuance.
People didn't make the choices that I thought they would make.
