Review of Even Dwarfs Started Small (1971) by Tibor B — 13 Aug 2008
Very strange piece of absurd cinema from Werner Herzog, following the childishly anarchic "Lord of the Flies" rebellion of a group of dwarves against the director of some bizarre institution they are held in on a volcanic island.
Although there is a pleasing sense of innocence to their actions, there are certainly disturbing undercurrents here from the onscreen animal cruelty to the constant cackling laugh of timid onlooker Hombre.
You can read all kinds of allegory into it but it maybe best experienced as one of those unforgettable midnight movies.
