Review of East Is East (1999) by Lanning : — 18 Apr 2006
An all-around great group of actors transforms this story about ethnicity and family relations into a universal portrayal of the good and not-so-good ties that bind us to our siblings, our parents, our spouses, and our children.
Superior emotionally perfect perfomances by Puri, the strong-willed, tradition-bound Pakistani father and husband who knows what is best for everyone, and Bassett, the resilient English mother and wife who struggles to mediate the family drama.
A treat to see Archie Panjabi, the lone sister holding her own among six brothers, before she played Jess' older sister Pinky in BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM.
