Review of Drinking Buddies (2013) by Harry G — 18 Feb 2014
It's slow moving, but full of charm and eminently human. Wilde produces easily one of her best and most naturalistic performances whilst the by turns inarticulately sensitive and overtly jolly Johnson is a pleasure to watch.
Perhaps what is most enjoyable about this film is also what is largely responsible for it's slightly sedentary pace; all of the characters are fundamentally decent people who are simply struggling to do both what is right, and what will make them happy.
There are no villains. Even alcohol is refreshingly shown not as a destroyer of lives, but a breaker of walls. However one can't help but feel that the re-acceptance of the status quo at the end is at most a temporary measure and for better or worse the main characters will bow to the inevitable eventually.
