Review of Dogma (1999) by Jamie D — 20 Nov 2011
Bethany is the last scion, meaning she is the last decedent of Christ. She has been tapped, along with Jay, Silent Bob, and Rufus the 13th Apostle, to help stop the rogue angels Loki and Bartleby from exploiting a loophole that gets them back into heaven. Cardinal Glick has declared that those who enter a specific church in New Jersey on a certain day will have all of their sins wiped away. This would negate all of existence by proving that God isn't infallible.
This is a tongue in cheek comedy about the seriousness of Catholicism and the importance of faith. After centuries of traditions, sometimes there is too much pomp and circumstance and not enough substance in faith. I think this movie hits the right chords in balancing the comedic aspects of religion, and the importance of having faith, no matter what it's in.
