Review of Do the Right Thing (1997) by Ka M — 22 Feb 2010
The soundtrack noise, grating voices and situations of this film increasingly irritate, matching the characters building frustrations on what seems like the hottest day of the year. Not since Eraserhead have I felt a movie was more of an experience than a narrative, though there's plenty of story here.
Lee gives the good and bad even hand to all perspectives and you have to wonder if people haven't got better things to do with their lives. They probably wonder too, which may be another contributory factor to the rising frustrations.
Very well paced and keeps you in the film sympathising with your hero or heroine of choice. A great piece of art and Lee's finest work to date - he won't do better. Neither will most of the actors - see Rosie Perez!
