Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Anthony V — 11 Feb 2009
There are two schools of thought on this film and indeed, George Romero in general. One believes this is the work of an overrated hack, and the others see the genius. I come down firmly on the side of the later.
Comparisons to "Cloverfield", "The Blair Witch Project", and "[Rec]" are null and void. Here Romero not only reinvents his zombie sage, but gives a brutal commentary on media over saturation and manipulation. Unlike previous Dead films, most of the characters prefer to be passive, rather than actively participate in their survival.
In a true return to form, Romero has created another thinking person's horror film.
