Review of Cruising (1980) by Ashu R — 23 Oct 2007
Dark and gutsy film by William Friedkin (dir. The Excorcist), that almost destroyed his career. Protested by gay groups when it was released in 1982, the film explores the subculture of gay S&M bars in NY.
Viewing it 25 years later, the film is far from anti-gay and instead highlights the homophobia of the NYPD, including a "straight" cop, brilliantly portrayed by Pacino, questioning his own sexuality as he delves deeper into the world of tops, bottoms and leather.
Highlights: beautiful shots of a once seedy Meatpacking District and a great soundtrack, which doesn't include the stereotypically gay anthems of Donna Summer or Sylvester. Also, some of the more gratuitious scenes take place at the legendary Hellfire Club, which now houses Vento, a trendy Italian restaurant.
