Review of Cosmopolis (2012) by Jiana W — 15 May 2013
Like the book that inspired it, the movie version of Cosmopolis has a lot to say about the lack of redeeming values in modern day capitalist society. The film version carries as much punch as it's literary form.
Audience reviews make mention of the wooden performances of most of the main characters, but that is as they are supposed to be, because these characters have never really lived--their lives have no meaning.
The only one who is really alive, because he is truly suffering in seeing and feeling the emptiness is Paul Giamatti's Benno Levin. As soon as he appears, the performances become rivetingly emotional.
Cronenberg has faithfully brought Don DeLillo's book to the screen.
