Review of Clash of the Titans (1981) by Aaron N — 30 Nov 2009
When I was about four I referred to this movie as "that movie with the flying horse." How disappointed I always was when Colombia Tri-Star's old logo would come up on screen and it was not this movie.
Clash of the Titans is a very basic, very good old fashioned sword and sorcery flick. It's an honest and really well done telling of the classic Greek myth of Perseus and the slaying of Medusa. But everyone plays it with such conviction, belief, and gravitas that it feels more real and more true than anything else. Lawrence Olivier and Maggie Smith have a lot to do with that but everyone really gives a great performance.
This movie introduced me to the amazement that was Ray Harryhausen's effects and the stop motion is brilliant and this was him at the height of his game. And, finally, this movie is plain fun. It makes me feel like I'm four years old in awe every time I see Pegasus take flight and you can't beat that.
