Review of Churchill (2017) by Stuart M — 09 Dec 2018
A decent if somewhat drawn out film. The main difficulty it faces is that the key conflict (a made up claim that Churchill was still fighting against the Normandy landings in the final week before D-Day) is not interesting or varying enough to fill a whole film.
Basically, Churchill keeps running around saying the same thing in slightly different ways. It could work if there was more going on, but that's pretty much it. Still, the performances are good (except an oddly miscast Eisenhower) and the central concept is interesting.
The focus on Churchill's flaws and insecurities makes for a much more interesting character study than those that show only the brawn, even if it unfortunately goes too far and makes it hard to spot a great man anywhere in there.
