Review of Chalk (2001) by Brendan S — 29 Aug 2009
One of the best mockumentaries I've ever seen, "Chalk" truly captures the inanity of the teaching profession, and the ludicrous behind-the-scenes bickering, in-fighting, and bureaucracy that can take a noble profession and turn it into something extremely gross and bitter.
There's an uplifting quality to a few of the characters here, also, as they conquer their fears and connect with students, and overall this is a light-hearted film, but there's also a sadness that hangs over the entire production: it's a mockumentary, but the difficulties (from budget cuts, to long hours and burn-out, to terrible parents) feel all too real.
