Review of Certain Women (2016) by Jaime M — 14 Oct 2016
This is a low key, minimalist character study of four women from Montana. Although this doesn't sound very exciting, but the film is silent and powerful body-punch which leaves the open and lonely viewers devastated and uplifted at the same time.
About non-dramatic, not-romanticized acceptance of our riole in life, emotional and practical compromises, giving up love and intimacy for safety and survival. Non-judgmental storytelling style, although men handled with soft satirical and comical touch.
The most memorable is Lily Gladstone, an great Native Indian actress, a ranch hand who falls in love with young lawyer, played by Kristen Stewart. Her desire and pain is amazing. Kelly Reichardt's film is this decade's Brokeback Mountain, with less edge, but more poetry.
5*.
