Review of Castle Freak (1996) by Elise M — 02 Jun 2008
Director Stuart Gordon adapts another H.P. Lovecraft tale with Castle Freak. Jeffrey Combs plays an alcoholic who loses his son in a car accident, and blinds his daughter. His wife blames him for the drunken ordeal, and they decide to getaway from their troubles by staying in their newly inherited castle.
Unbeknown to him, the duchess who willed him the castle to him also had a son, who she kept chained up in the basement, and beat on daily. Now he has escaped, and wants revenge. The movie is your standard grotesque slasher film, but with a little more added to it.
The mystery of the freak and the character development between Combs and his wife adds another layer to the standard horror fare. Some of the scenes are jsut disgusting, as is the amazing full body make up job done for the freak.
If you are looking for a low budget slasher film that you probably haven't seen, then I think this film will deliver what you are looking for.
