Viggo looks very unconfortable acting in a Spanish movie, with the dialogue in spanish. I think that affected his acting. Viggo used to live in Argentina, so his spanish is fluent, but probably with a strange accent.

Now, take your strange accent and try to act like a Spaniard, with their accent and everything....a mess that's what you get.
