Review of Café de Flore (2011) by Amanda C — 27 May 2012
Cafe de Flore is a beautiful film. Vallee shows once again his remarkable ability to navigate human relationships that are touching and utterly real. He seamlessly weaves his two stories together, one of a mother and her devotion to her son, the other of a man who's life is perfect from the outside.
The connections he creates are unexpected, but somehow fit easily together. Cafe de Flore has the possibly unique distinction of having both a solid and coherent story, while being wholly ambiguous and almost avant-garde in execution.
The visuals are stunning as are the performances. It's not an easy film, but it is well worth the effort it requires as it is a film that will leave you breathless.
