Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by David S — 15 Sep 2010
Not everyone will get this movie. It's not designed to make you think the main character is charming, it's not about standard Bill Murray comedy, it's not a story that answers your questions.
This is a movie about feeling lost. It is a tale rife with false starts and hopeless travels. It also has the trademark Jarmusch hipness that some of us love so much - everything, from the color to the music to the decor, is deliciously fun and somehow low-tech and retro.
And there are moments of cynical humor that are intense and perfectly acted. But the film's main strength is that it accurately expresses the almost-inexpressible feeling of loss one can have in life when one dimly senses that things have somehow gone awry, and, somewhere, without much notice, the train jumped the tracks quite a distance back.
For this alone, it is masterful. I recommend getting the soundtrack as well.
