Review of Brighton Rock (2010) by Em K — 17 Feb 2012
Graham Greene's classic "Brighton Rock" is remade here by Rowan Joffe (son of director Roland Joffe) but updated to the mods & rockers scene of the 1960s. Some decent work here by the supporting cast which includes Helen Mirren, John Hurt and Andy Serkis.
The leads, Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough, are good but it's really a hard story to warm to as there are so few likable aspects to this gangster/love story. I will say this, I wasn't aware of Riseborough before seeing her in Madonna's "W.
E." where she plays Wallis Simpson, and you'd never even know she was the same actress as she's completely different in this film. If you're a fan of the British Gangster Film, this might be right up your alley.
