Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Harry T — 02 Feb 2009
Hollywood doesn't approve of arranged marriages--think of poor Holly Hunter losing her finger in The Piano. I was pleasantly surprised by this low-key, independent film about a Bangladesh woman becoming independent in London.
At one point, she says "there are two kinds of love...the second is a love that starts very slow and you don't even know you're in love." True! My sentiments about this movie. She neither chooses her husband nor her lover but focuses on her daughters and life as a single mom in East London.
The movie also touches on the aftermath of 9/11 and the impact on Muslims worldwide. I believed every second of it.
