Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Lucas Y — 10 Jun 2010
Brightly lit film noir. David Lynch's visual style ranks among the best of living American directors. Shots in the film are atypical, jarring, and beautiful. The vulgar display of violence and sexuality were much more rare at the time, so Lynch's openness with them was shocking. Kyle MacLachlan is perfect as the young man coming home to what appears to be a peaceful small town, but what lies beneath is a very seedy underworld that includes a man addicted to huffing named Frank Booth. I think a psychotic Dennis Hopper and Rosselinni made this film. They were both terrific. So many popular, yet disturbing scenes in this. That first rape scene had to catch everyone off guard. I will never underestimate David Lynch again after this. He's proven his versatility as a director many times.
Frank Booth: What's your favorite beer?
Jeffrey: Heinekin.
Frank Booth: F*ck that sh*t! Pabst Blue Ribbon!
Frank Booth: You're one suave mother f*cker!
