Review of Blood and Black Lace (1964) by Christopher S — 30 Jun 2009
Often considered to be the first giallo film, Mario Bava's horror thriller is supremely stylish, but not really his best work. Innovative camerawork, lush color cinematography, and cinematic inventiveness aside, the story is awkward, repetitive, and often barely comprehensible.
Entertaining for fans of Bava and Italian horror, but its cult classic reputation must come mostly from its historical importance. Great jazz score, though.
