Review of Black Bread (2010) by Dickie L — 23 Apr 2011
After a socko opening sequence, Black Bread settles down into a handsomely mounted but slightly turgid Spanish Civil War drama as seen through the eyes of a child. Given the topic, its bound to provoke comparisons with Pan's Labrynth, albeit not favourably.
Although for the most part admirably avoiding black and white portrayals of the Fascist regime and its collaborators, Black Bread also avoids engaging emotionally due to the main protagonist (and the audience) not being privvy to key events and actions until well after the fact.
A film to admire for its beauty more than to enjoy as a visceral experience.
