Review of Beat Street (1984) by B K — 12 Jul 2008
No, this doesnt merit a 10 rating as a film, but it is a "hood classic" so to speak. The breaking is top notch and it captures the era, a time when hip-hop and break-dancing was on the cusp of emerging.
Ramo as a bomber, Lee as a breaker, Kenny as an MC. What is not to like? Yes, its cheesy if you watch it now, but most films of this genre are. You watch a new version (Step Up) nowadays, and they can't possibly compare to the originality that was present in Stan Lathan's film.
Its a 10 to me for what it was.
