Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Douglas R — 14 Oct 2012
Battle Royale captures the human duality of being capable of cruel violence and selfless sacrifice in this battle of survival instincts and affinity. The staggeringly graphic depictions of violence and profound moments of emotion and adulation oscillate between visceral and emotive.
The film abounds in jaw-dropping scenes of out-of-control carnage in a thrilling bloody buffet that would impress even the most diehard Peckinpah and Tarantino fans. It also holds a hefty social commentary of teenage ostracization and despair, and some great laughs to boot.
This is the original Hunger Games, and far superior at that.
