Review of Bastard (2015) by Dylan V — 17 Oct 2015
An impeccably shot, perfectly scored and confidently directed debut from rising filmmakers Powell Robinson and Patrick R. Young.
---.
Does it have its problems? Sure. But then this dildo enters the movie, you see, and then, well, those problems don't matter so much anymore.
Heretofore unknown actor William Ford-Conway (moonlighting as the film's editor) makes a delightful voiceover cameo that I hope gets him some more work in that arena. Madison West also turns in a neat performance in a small scene--watch for her, she's going to rise quickly. The cast's standouts are Will Tranfo and Rebekah Kennedy, who do a whole lot during their precious moments of screen time.
I wasn't kidding about 'perfectly scored,' either--Kyle Hnedak's original music deserves Oscar consideration, as his 80s-inspired synth symphonies are some of the best of the year.
Definitely stoked to see what these filmmakers do next.
