Review of Barfly (1987) by Jack R — 07 Jan 2009
This film is one of those sleeper hits that is actually a classic. In fact, this could probably be considered an early indie flick. At first glance, it looks like a very sad story because the main character is an alcoholic, but there is humor throughout.
Charles Bukowski's story resonates today as a comment on societal pressures and expectations. Henry, the alcoholic, barfly writer, dares to follow his own path. Ironically, his individuality becomes his strength as he refuses to utilize his talent for financial gain.
He'd rather be seen as a loser than live in "a castle with gold bars." Most protagonists change during the course of a movie, but why should they?
