Review of Baby Face (1933) by Rachel B — 03 Jul 2008
This film made Stanwyck one of my favorite actresses. Her character, Lily Powers, an exploited girl from the wrong side of the tracks, literally sleeps her way to the top of a New York bank, breaking hearts and ruining the lives of men along the way.
The best part? Not only is she self aware of her cagey, gold digging, mantrap ways, when she opts to reform it's on her own terms. This was so fabulous that the film was censored and recut in such a way to make sure the audience knew Lily was in the wrong.
It wasn't until recently that the film was restored to its intended narrative.
