Review of Baby Doll (1956) by Laura H — 02 Jul 2009
Okay, first off--the MPAA (or CARA or whoever the hell they're known as now) needs to pull their heads out of the sand and re-rate this movie. There is NOTHING in this movie that would warrant an R rating! PG (or perhaps PG-13 because of extensive use of the N word) but R? PLEASE!!
Now that's out of the way--this movie was FANTASTIC! The late Karl Malden really and truly shows his superb acting talent in this, and Carroll Baker and Eli Wallach? WOW! Man, I can't think of any scene from any movie today that would even hold a candle to the sultry and sexual tension that these two actors were able to portray with near perfection! Perhaps some others may be put off by the thumb-sucking and the make of the bed, but still--it's an incredible movie to watch. Well-done and well-directed. :).
