Review of Alice in the Cities (1974) by Dan B — 24 Nov 2008
Beautiful, low key road movie that (amongst other things) perfectly captures the European's fascination with America and sense of melancholy upon leaving it. (Though I don't share the hero's disdain for US TV.
) Impossible to imagine this film being made nowadays - the central relationship would never be viewed as innocently as it is here. The two leads are superb as is the black and white photography and overall I enjoyed it so much I almost wanted to go back and forgive Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire for nearly boring me to death.
Quite wonderful.
