Review of Alex Strangelove (2018) by Pedro J — 20 Jul 2018
Relying on strong leads and an empathic story, Alex Strangelove abnormally repurposes the teen sex comedy template to entertaining effect, but often middling results. Its good intentions are often belied by an uninventive approach, which only belatedly-yet competently-subverts the formula, delivering a poignant closing arch to the otherwise incongruous, clichéd first part.
For a film as deftly centered on fluidity, its frequently rigid direction could have benefitted from more of it.
