Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Jim H — 25 Apr 2008
Finally saw it; amazing.
Herzog's films all work well on their own merits and on a meta-literary level. For example; the trope of the obsessive man driving himself to tragedy or greatness mirroring Herzog himself.
I mention this because whilst 'Aguirre...' is great of its own accord, you really have to know all the tales behind the shooting of this film to appreciate it completely.
Knowing the stories about what happened between Herzog and Kinski before, during, and after filming makes this all the more unmissable.
Truly a masterpiece.
