Review of A United Kingdom (2016) by Greg C — 05 Mar 2017
Based on the true romance and political hurdles of an English shop keepers daughter and a crown Prince of the African nation of Bechuanaland which would become Botswana. Beautiful cinematography. Good direction by one of the rising female directors of color, Amma Asante.
The story is a bit conventionally cloying on the heart strings. Lead actress Rosamund Pike makes us feel the real life woman who put in the work to become a queen-in-waiting and then first lady of an African nation.
If Meryl Streep were a black man, she would be David Oyelowo.
