Review of A Dog Year (2009) by Jay B — 16 Dec 2010
*** (out of four).
Unabitious and fairly simple storytelling, but it is made worthwhile by a nice turn by Jeff Bridges and a cute and endearing pooch.
Bridges plays a writer who has become bitter and depressed. He takes in a dog who has been abused. They don't hit it off and Bridges doesn't know if he has the strength to care for the animal. Reluctantly he decides to keep the dog.
I like how the film is little and unasuming. It also doesn't fail in the end by making everything overly sentimental. It keeps one foot in realism.
