He was born in Athens on 3 February 1956 and hails from the island of Mykonos and Naxos. He is married to Isidora Sideri and have a daughter,Eleonora Zouganelis. Great influence on the subsequent course of the exercise the fact that both his parents were deaf and mute.
He began his musical studies in early childhood in Agios Nikolaos Acharnon with the ιεροψάλτη professor Th. Theodorakopoulos in byzantine music. At the Hellenic Conservatory, he studied guitar with professors X. Εκμεκτσόγλου and Kostas Τρίαντο and theoretically with Antiochus charlie rose. Continued at the National Conservatory of Athens, with harmony, music theory and piano under the teaching of Πατρικίδη and Βώκου. Decisive role in the development of his musical studies, he played the composer Nikos Mamangakis, who taught him orchestration and rhythm.
In 1975, with a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture (for the work of "Ten Byzantine essays" small symphonic ensemble and mixed choir), he studied composition, orchestration and opera in the Academy of Arts in Munich, from which he graduated with honors.
Yannis Zouganelis has acted in films with Laertis Malkotsis, Sakis Boulas, Katerina Papoutsaki and Zeta Douka.
