Thomas Woodrow Wilson born December 28 1856 in Staunton, Virginia. His father is pastor of the presbyterian church and the young Woodrow receives an education heavily steeped in these beliefs ; it is also marked by his memories of the Civil War, and the disasters it has brought. At 19, he entered the university of Princeton and then began the study of law. He settled as a lawyer but after a year he resumed his studies and turned to history and political science. He presented his doctoral thesis 30 years ; an analysis in favour of a greater executive power in the central government, which became one of the classic studies in political science. Influenced by theorists as british as Edmund Burke, Wilson is a liberal nostalgic for the purity of democratic first years of the Republic. It is destined for a career as a history teacher but dream of engaging in politics. In 1902, he became president of Princeton university and embarked on a comprehensive reform of the education system. The democratic Party the contacts in 1910 and the present as a candidate for the office of governor of the State of New Jersey. He was elected and, in just one year, is embarking on a reform of electoral laws, nomination of candidates by primary elections direct, in order to prevent the political machinations. It is quickly noticed by the leaders of the party at the national level and succeeded in being designated the candidate of the democratic Party in 1912. His co-candidate is a governor of Indiana whose reputation is now linked to this note : "the only thing this country needs is a good cigar for 5 cents ". His campaign is based on the elimination of industrial conglomerates, the creation of a federal income tax and senatorial elections by universal suffrage. He opposes àTheodore Roosevelt who is the supporter of a presidential power strong, guarantor of liberties, as he defends competition as a factor of balance. The presidential election of 1912 was a real triangular between the candidate of the democratic Party, the outgoing president and candidate of the republican Party and finally Theodore Roosevelt, who founded his own progressive Party when he can't get the nomination of the republican Party. Woodrow Wilson is elected thanks to the division within the republican Party ; the total of the votes of Taft and Roosevelt is in effect superior to that obtained by Wilson1.
