Raymond Gérôme is the son of a belgian industrial, Leon de Backer, and of a Dutch Mary Fiekers. He made his studies at the free University of Brussels and at the school of dramatic Art, Charles Dullin. A passion for the theatre, he founded in 1941, the Youth theatre of Belgium, and then rises many of the pieces aupalais des beaux-arts and at the theatre National in Brussels, of which he became the artistic director until 1952. In 1954, he moved to Paris and began a long career in the theatre but also cinema that leads him to rub shoulders with the biggest names in theatre and French cinema. The careers of the actor and director have then no secrets for him. It will be stage director at the Comédie-Française, the théâtre du Gymnase, the théâtre de la Madeleine and authéâtre Montparnasse. In theatre, he directed Phaedra (her favourite part), Don Juan in hell with Pierre Brasseur and Paul Meurisse, Coletteavec Jean-Pierre Aumont in the 1960s or even The Amants terribles of Noel Coward with Danielle Darrieux. He is also the author of numerous plays, poems, and stories. His first novel, the One who slept in Prague, released in 1991. In film, he appeared alongside Jean-Paul Belmondo and Bourvil in The Brain by Gérard Oury, Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni in the most important Event since man walked on the Moon deJacques Demy, or even Marina Vlady and Jean Marais in La Princesse de Cleves by Jean Delannoy, in which he played the role of Henri II. He is the embodiment of Louis XIV in The Case of the poisons of Henri Decoin. He is involved in a number of television series, like The Last Five Minutes, The Secret of the flemish and Maigret. He is the regent Philippe d'orléans in several tv movies including Lagardère Jean-Pierre Decourt, the president of the court in The Matter of Seznec by Yves Boisset and Sherlock Holmes for a representation of The theater that night Pierre Sabbagh, a show for which he directed a dozen pieces. In 1974, he participated in the recording of the opera by Salvador Dalí to Be God, the music of Igor Wakhévitch (son of the décorateurGeorges Wakhévitch), in which he plays the role of the Dali male with the sides of Delphine Seyrig, Dali female (Dali is voulaitandrogyne), and Catherine Allegret, Alain Cuny and Didier Haudepin. He also lends his voice to many actors and cartoon characters : Pocahontas, Tom and Jerry, the movie, Fievel in the Wild West, etc, Its roles are imbued with distinction, phlegm, humour and sometimes cynicism, his tone of voice serious and metal, the silhouette, high and austere, marked a whole generation. An inveterate traveller and a polyglot enthusiast, he died le3 February 2002 aux Lilas, Seine-Saint-Denis.
