Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Jun K — 13 Oct 2011
Beautiful shots of the landscapes n colors, haunting soundtracks, n a badass character. This film has only few pages of dialogues, it's all about visuals atmospheres n sounds, which dir. Nicholas Winding Refn did a great job with.
The main character, one eyed, doesn't speak entire film. Even tho he is a ruthless killer, he's very like-able n intriguing, because he first starts off as a captive, who is forced to fight in an unfair match. It makes us sympathize him, even tho he fearfully bashes the head of other guy. Also partnering him with a boy, who he starts to feel fond of n protect, show his humanity.
The biggest lack for me in this film is the story. It realize heavily on symbolism, which I missed n couldn't understand a lot, so it must be why I didnt get clear story. If I dont get the story n/or character (I did like this character tho), the movie is flat boring for me, but this film didnt. Def need to revisit this film very soon n rerate it.
I'm starting to appreciate dir. Refn's films. His storytelling with visuals n sounds r amazing. I'm looking forward to see more of his films.
