Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Cris A — 04 May 2013
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. This movie is a piece of art - breathtaking cinematography and unconventional story-telling that is primeval and mythology rich. The lead character does not speak, there is also very little dialogue among the others, and the action is laced with brutality.
I would suggest only those with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the convergence between violence and religion in Viking times should watch this film and when they do to be patient with the pacing of the movie.
As one of the professional critics has described - "Mikkelsen verifies that, even without saying a word, he's an unnervingly unhinged presence." (I can easily see why he is an excellent choice to play the character Hannibal in Bryan Fuller's latest series.
