Review of The Promise (2017) by E R — 22 Apr 2017
Deeply emotional and moving, historically accurate, beautifully filmed, expertly acted, and a true cinematic triumph for the Armenian people. The film portrays all the various methods used to exterminate the Armenian people from the Ottoman Empire including the arrest and murder of wealthy intellectuals in Istanbul, death marches into the Syrian deserts, labor camps, massacres of Armenian villages, etc.
Makes a clear case for the Armenian Genocide being a government orchestrated extermination of the Armenian people. Also portrays Turks unwilling to go along with such plans, despite great personal risk.
Shows both the bravery of journalists who documented the genocide as well as missionaries who helped some Armenians escape. Captures the trauma of genocide for all parties directly affected by the loss of loved ones.
A truly moving film and a must see for those wanting to learn more about this forgotten piece of history, which served as the forerunner to the Holocaust and more recent genocides.
