Review of The Promise (2017) by Ed H — 22 Apr 2017
I, unlike {unfortunately} many other reviewers here and on IMBd's website who have posted negative ratings/reviews, actually have seen the movie "The Promise". While I would be less than honest to assert that this is the best movie which I have ever seen, I nonetheless believe that it is an excellent movie which is worthwhile for people to see, by those (mostly non-Armenians) who know nothing or very little about the Armenian GENOCIDE committed by the {Ottoman}Turkish Government approximately 100 years ago, and also by Armenians who know all too well the tragic {factual}story of the GENOCIDE. For the latter, I believe it can provide a cathartic effect, the importance of which cannot be overstated for descendants of the GENOCIDE who learned of it from their ancestors (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.) and, yet, have to endure the continued denial of this PREMEDITATED CRIME by the Government, citizens, and lobbyists of the present day Republic Of Turkey.
As has been explained by the producer and director of the movie, being the first mainstream/major motion picture focusing on the plight of the Armenian people -- which is unknown by so many people -- to actually have made it to theaters around the world, it was felt that portraying the GENOCIDE as the backdrop of the story about the relationship between the film's main characters would be the most effective method of helping the audience understand the GENOCIDE by personalizing it via these characters. I sincerely encourage people to go and see the movie in order to decide for themsleves.
