Review of The Promise (2017) by Wendy W — 20 Aug 2017
For better or for worse, 'The Promise' is a love story at its core, and whilst that's nice enough, it means the actual atrocities, suffering and scale of crime committed against the Armenian people doesn't get translated as well as it could have been - it just felt like it didn't quite pack the punch it should have (it's almost a bit sappy, at times), despite a couple of scenes that are undeniably gut-wrenching.
Nevertheless, it's nicely filmed and well-acted by a great cast, and for all its short-comings, it still does a decent job of bringing to life a lesser known, terrible part of human history (yet another one) that everyone should be aware of.
How does the saying go? "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - apparently we, as humans, always need a reminder of that.
