Review of Soulmate (2013) by Jason L — 14 Sep 2014
Soulmate may not be what most people would class as a "classic" ghost story but with Axelle Carolyn at the helm (who also wrote it) there is a certain charm about it which is drenched in melancholy. It concerns a young woman called Audrey (played by Anna Walton who is very believable in the part) who rents a house out in the welsh countryside to escape her troubles. It is there she begins to hear noises coming from a locked room in the house and soon begins to inquire about the room from the local doctor and his wife (played by Nick Brimble and Tanya Myers). and eventually Audrey goes to investigate and finds something unexpected..
While not the most suspenseful of films, it is Axelle Carolyn's direction of Anna Walton as Audrey and Walton's performance that give the film its soul and character. Add to that the bleak and hauntingly beautiful welsh countryside as a character all its own also and you have a pleasant ghost story which does falter in the third act but still was enough to keep me interested.
