Too timid in its subject matter to make a worthwhile statement.

1.) It's three hours for no reason other than Martin Scorsese's own self indulgence. Easily could have cut long, repetitive scenes to allow for better character and plot development.

2.) The film is too timid to address an actual philosophical debate regarding religious dichotomies and their cultural and moral influences. They don't even scratch the surface, even though this priest is going through the ultimate test of his faith. And rather than show a character that is okay with losing his religion, or at least a realistic questioning of faith that results in a new definition of what the faith means to them, they go the stereotypical stubborn Christian route, which is to not take anyone else's view into account and continue to believe in their dichotomy "just because.".

Had the potential to incite a conversation about worldwide religions and their similarities, instead just makes the Japanese look like assholes.
