Review of Silence (2017) by Dan A — 01 Jan 2017
A pretty fascinating examination of human nature, moral dilemmas, and culture Vs religion. You don't need to be religious to enjoy or relate to the challenges the characters face throughout the story; I found it very thought-provoking.
Scorsese is a master director and it really shows. Every technical element of the film is near enough perfect. I always thought Andrew Garfield was a bit of a lightweight but he's beginning to win me over; he was excellent in this. As was Adam Driver, who is one of my favourite actors working right now.
I think it's a little too long, it could really benefit from a tighter edit and to be shaved down by about 10 or so minutes. Also, while performances are very good, Andrew Garfield's accent was shaky and distracting in places, I reckon it would have been better if he just used his normal real life accent.
Overall I thought it was excellent though.
