Review of Silence (2017) by Michelle B — 15 Jan 2017
Seeing this was three hours of my life I will never get back. Yes, it was beautiful, harrowing and thought-provoking. It was also harrowing, depressingly grey and inconclusive. I was constantly annoyed by everyone's interpretation of a Portuguese accent and disbelieving that so many Japanese peasants had such a good grasp of the language. The premise that the Japanese could not accept Christianity belied the "hundreds of thousands" of them who were murdered for their beliefs. The argument that it would be forgiven if the padres to give up the.
The attempt to convert was an interesting one, if a bit laughable. Belief is belief, is it not? Too many questions left unanswered. And why did I keep thinking about the behavior of Japanese soldiers during WWII???
