Review of Silence (2017) by Steven B — 21 Jan 2017
It took Scorsese 30 years to make this film and it feels like it. Lots of Old Geezers Who Go To The Matinee Alone and lots of snoring as this 3 hour long dirge continued. I about gave up a couple of times but hung in there to the end, and the second end, and even the third end.
So why 3 stars? Well the visuals are often wonderful, if gratuitous and not related to the story, but it was good to look at most of the time. Andrew Garfield was very good and I hope they rushed Adam Driver to the hospital after filming; he looked like a survivor of a concentration camp.
I'm still not sure what the take away point is to this one. There is a lot of suffering and a lot of religious contemplation, but in the end it was all pretty hollow to me. If you go wear an adult depends or avoid fluids for about half a day before hand.
