Review of Silence (2017) by Arseniy V — 21 Jan 2017
I found this a very strong piece, save for one gripe. The movie is called Silence and that's where its strength lies. I.e. In the great ambiguity and mystery of said silence. Scorsese on the other hand, seems like he couldn't quite take his own film's deafening silence after a while and decided to overfill it.
Which only took away from said strength for me. Doing too much to marry his creation to a particular (and terribly shaky imo) worldview. On the other hand, if these were two virtually identical stories (e.
G. one of a Buddhist monk and one of a Catholic priest), told side by side - that would have amply resolved said problem. Again however, a very strong effort all the same.
